INFOKU, Cepu, BLORA -An ancient buffalo horn fossil thought to be 250,000 years old was successfully saved by the technical team in the cultural sector of the Youth, Sports, Culture and Tourism Office (Dinporabudpar) of Blora Regency after receiving a report from residents of Gondel Village, Kedungtuban District, Blora.
"This discovery began with a report from a resident who found a fossil of an ancient buffalo horn or Bubalus Palaeokarabao measuring 120 centimeters long and 24 centimeters wide," explained the Manager of the Artifact House and Cultural Heritage Management Officer of the Blora Department of Youth and Sports, Culture, and Tourism, Lukman Wijayanto, in Blora, Monday (4/8/2025).
According to Lukman, the first time the buffalo horn fossil was found was by Ngadi (62) and a number of residents of Gondel Village, Kedungtuban District while looking for sand in the river on Tuesday (29/7/2025).

"So, Mr. Ngadi and the residents were actually looking for sand. They were traditional sand diggers using hoes. So, it wasn't a large-scale operation. While digging, they found this. So, we really appreciate their willingness to report it to the village officials, who then forwarded it to the Department of Youth and Sports (Dinporabudpar)," he explained.
After the report was received, a technical team from the Blora Dinporabudpar was deployed to the location in Dukuh Kedungpereng, Gondel Village.
Lukman said that fragments were still found there and from the small excavation that was carried out, they managed to save fragments of the cranium or skull, then there was the jaw.
"The jaw of an ancient buffalo was then secured at the Blora Artifact House," he explained.

Currently, the fossil horns are still kept in a resident's house, while the skull and jaw have been secured to the Blora Artifact House for preservation.
According to Lukman, because it is related to the policy of handling cultural heritage, he is waiting for direction and policies from the leadership.
Lukman explained that his party works in accordance with Law Number 11 of 2010 concerning Cultural Heritage, as well as Regional Regulation Number 10 of 2019 concerning the Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Blora Regency.
" This means that there are certainly important values, benefits, and so on for the world of education, science, and so on, as stated in the law," he said.
Based on the contour and texture of the soil where the fossil was found, his team suspects that there are many other large fossils embedded intact.

"Yesterday, we identified the soil as tuffaceous. In geology, that's called tuffaceous soil. When we examined the site where the remains were found, we found many intact fragments, including this jaw and a cranium. There's a good chance there's more of that there," Lukman explained. (Heru)
