Literacy and Numeracy Skills of Elementary & Middle School Students Below Minimum


INFOKU, BLORA – Based on the results of last year's student assessment at the elementary and junior high school levels in Blora, students' literacy and numeracy skills are below the minimum competency.

It is suspected that students' interest in reading. The education office (disdik) plans to review the education report cards. 

The Head of the Blora Education Office, Aunur Rofiq, through the Head of the Basic Education Development Division, Titik Umiyati, explained that the low literacy and numeracy abilities are suspected to be low in children's reading culture.

Reading literacy is not maximized. "We will try to dissect education report cards," he said.

The average elementary literacy ability based on last year's national assessment was at 1.77.

This figure is below the average for Central Java Province, which is 1.83. However, it is above the national average of around 1.68.

"There are still 30.12 percent of students who have just reached basic abilities. There are also 12.3 percent of students who need special interventions," he explained.

Based on the educational report cards, it was noted that students had not been able to determine and retrieve explicit information in the text or make simple interpretations.

"Making circulars related to the activities of KKG, KKKS, and Indonesian language teacher guidance to improve students' ability to understand and evaluate various types of texts," he explained.

Titik said, plans to review the education report cards for each school are to find out the problems. Also, it can be used as a way of initial analysis to determine future intervention steps.

“So that every school knows the problems faced. Because in literacy, it's not just reading, but several sub-subjects must be seen," he explained.

This condition, according to Titik, requires immediate action, so as not to affect other schools.  ( Endah / IST )
