INFOKU, BLORA –A rather shocking sight was witnessed: a bat nest was clearly visible in the gamelan room of Karangjati 1 State Elementary School, Blora.
The bat nest is located under the roof of the second floor of a building that was once used as a classroom.
The sound of bats was also heard loudly during the teaching and learning process at the school.
Likewise, the smell of nocturnal animal droppings is also very pungent to the nose.
"What is clear is that this smell comes from bats, it's unpleasant, pungent," said Sulistiningsih, a local teacher when met by reporters, Thursday (24/7/2025).
He admitted that there were teachers who deliberately wore masks because they couldn't stand the smell of bat droppings.
The bat nest has been on the ceiling for about five years.
The school has also made various efforts to drive away the animals that are active at night.
However, the efforts made have not yet produced results.
"The elementary school here has been trying numerous ways to get rid of the bats, but their nests are still there," he explained.
This condition was further exacerbated by the collapse of the school's roof ceiling.
The smell of bat droppings and the sound of bats really disrupt the learning process at the school.
In fact, almost every day the third grade classroom whose roof collapsed was cleaned because of bat droppings on the classroom floor.
"With the classroom ceiling collapsing, any debris that gets in the way automatically falls to the floor without any partitions. Every day, as soon as I arrive, I go up to clean the classroom. Sometimes, there's debris on the side. Just yesterday, after the collapse, bat droppings were present, and a dead bat even fell there," he explained.

SDN 1 Karangjati Blora is located on Jalan GOR Mustika, north of the Blora Regency Education Office. This public school has two floors.
The upper floor houses the gamelan room, the fifth-grade classroom, the third-grade classroom, and the sixth-grade classroom. (Endah/ IST )
