The "Sungkeman" Eid Tradition in Blora, Still Maintained


INFOKU, BLORA - Most Muslims in Blora Regency, Central Java, are still busy with the Eid 2023 event.

On H+1 of Eid 2023, staying in touch, apologizing to parents and family still colors the nuances of victory day after fasting Ramadan 1444 Hijriah.


Sungkeman on Idul Fitri 1444 Hijriah is still carried out by the people of Blora Regency as a hereditary tradition.

The travelers who have arrived at their hometown, along with other family members, perform the sungkeman, starting from the child to the parents or the elders.

Alhamdulillah , on this year's Eid, our family and I can gather again, sukkem to our parents, father, mother, uncles and brothers and other relatives," said Mughnii, who went home to his parents' house and celebrated Eid al-Fitr in Blora, Sunday (23/4) /2023).

A similar sentiment was expressed by the young couple Andy and Rizky Amalia, a resident of Kauman, Blora.

From various sources, it is stated that the Sungkeman tradition is carried out by children to their parents or elder families. Usually as a form of devotion to the child's parents or respect for the elders.

The procedure for the Lebaran Sungkeman that is commonly found in Indonesian society is by kneeling and kissing the hand.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Taufiqurrahman, an enthusiast of the Sungkeman tradition from Randublatung District, Blora Regency, said that in general, Sungkeman is a process of forgiving each other that is done by younger people to those who are older.

"Sungkeman which is done during Eid al-Fitr chooses the meaning of apologizing or nyuwun ngapura. The term ngapura itself comes from the Arabic 'ghafura' which means forgiveness," he explained.

According to him, the purpose of this custom is to glorify parents.

From various sources, it is said that the custom of this Sungkeman comes from the Javanese tradition brought by Kanjeng Gusti Prince Adipati Arya Sri Mangkunegara I from the Kraton Solo. Roes/KOM )
