INFOKU, BLORA - The village government has never given permission or approval for illegal oil well drilling activities in the village.
This was stated by the Head of Gandu Village , Iwan Sucipto.
"We have repeatedly reminded residents that this activity is dangerous and illegal. All decisions are entirely their own initiative. The village government is not involved in any way," Iwan emphasized.
However, he admitted he understood the reality of his people. A lack of employment opportunities has forced some to resort to risky means to meet their daily needs.

"Most residents have to migrate because there are few job opportunities in Blora. While drilling provides income, the risks are much greater," he said.
Iwan explained that the oil well's existence initially occurred by accident.
Residents struggling to access clean water during the dry season tried drilling wells, but in the process, they discovered oil deposits.
"News of the oil discovery spread quickly, even beyond the village. People from outside then came, some helped finance the drilling. From there, oil wells continued to emerge," he explained.

He expressed hope that activities that have been running illegally can soon be legalized.
According to him, if managed officially, the natural resource potential in the region could support the community's economy while minimizing the risk of fires that often claim lives.
"If it's official, residents can work peacefully, there are clear rules, and the results can be felt together," he said.
So far, most people have depended on traditional drilling activities for their livelihood, even though they are fully aware of the risks.
According to him, legality is expected to create new jobs, increase village income, and ensure safety and environmental sustainability. (Endah / IST )
